Bulldogs Love Their Walks! It’s a great way for them to get their exercise and release some built-up energy (and calories). However, walking a Bulldog is not like walking a typical dog. Many of these dogs have smaller airways, and are unable to breathe like most breeds. When using a collar, even light pulling can constrict their airway, causing them to choke, or even suffocate. Hence, choosing a leash for a bulldog is very important.
This is especially true for puppies during leash training. Since they must be lightly pulled, and tend to pull back themselves, collars can be extremely dangerous. Young puppies can be safely walked with a harness attached to a 4 to 6 foot leash.
And NEVER, EVER loop a leash around a Bulldogs neck! This allows for tightening and pressure on their airway that can easily injure, or even kill them, in a matter of seconds.
This is such an important rule to follow, so we always provide a harness and leash set with each of our English Bulldog puppies. We make sure that they start the leash training process safely and recommend that everyone continue to use them throughout their entire life.
Instead, each of our Bulldogs (and even our Bordeaux) have harnesses that are only used for walks. They go on as we walk out the door and come off immediately upon arriving home.
When purchasing a harness, it is best to choose an adjustable design that allows you to increase the size as your puppy grows, or accommodate slight changes in weight for adults. They come in a wide range of styles, from the basic nylon harnesses available at your local department store, to a more custom look with leather and spikes.
